There’s no snow in this week’s forecast, which could be a very good sign for Milton’s soccer teams.

The Yellowjackets’ boys and girls open their Division III state tournaments at home, both taking on athletic teams from ski academies. The Green Mountain Valley School will visit Milton for the second straight year in a Division II playdown-round game Tuesday at 3 p.m., and Stratton Mountain School will follow a day later for a boys playdown.

Both schools are private academies that target elite Nordic, Alpine and freestyle skiers.

Milton’s girls earned a 2-0 victory at home over GMV (3-3-4) in the quarterfinals a year ago, on the way to winning their third Division II state championship in four seasons. With the loss of three all-state players to graduation and a string of injuries hitting the team this fall, the Yellowjackets (8-5-1) had to win their last three games to get the eighth seed and a home game in the first round of the tournament.

The Waitsfield ski school and Milton played two common opponents this fall, Mt. Abraham and Vergennes. Green Mountain lost to both (4-0 to Mt. Abe, 2-1 to Vergennes) while the Yellowjackets split against the same teams (falling 4-3 to the Eagles and defeating Vergennes 2-0 last week).

If Milton comes out on top today, it will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals and would visit top-ranked Montpelier (11-2), which gets a bye through the first round.

The MHS boys earned the seventh seed with a 5-7-2 record, setting up a Wednesday playdown game against Stratton Mountain (3-5). Stratton’s schedule include just one Division II game, with two matches against D-IV teams and the rest D-III.

With just nine teams in Division II field hockey, Milton won’t open those playoffs until Friday, when the seventh-seed Yellowjackets visit U-32 High School in East Montpelier. U-32 (13-1) took its only loss of the fall when it was shut out 4-0 by Division III top seed Rice, and the Raiders allowed just 10 goals in their other 13 games. Milton (3-10-1) did not score a goal in its last three contests.

Division II football closes the regular season on Friday night, when the Yellowjackets will try to clinch the third seed with a victory at winless North Country. Rice and Burr & Burton are assured of the top two spots in the standings and will be at home for the November 2-3 semifinals, which Milton will qualify for barring a loss to the Falcons along with wins by Lyndon and Burr & Burton this weekend.

The cross country season concludes Saturday with the state championships at Thetford Academy.
