MILTON — Yellowjacket senior Madalyn Leggett scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the third quarter, leading a Milton charge to take control of Monday night’s Lake Division basketball game on the way to a 48-37 victory over visiting Missisquoi.

The Thunderbirds, motivated in a bid for their first win of the season, went into the halftime break up by one after a late score.

After each team managed just six points in the opening quarter, five MVU players scored in the second for a 14-13 edge in the period and a 20-19 lead. Emily Bourdeau led the attack with a pair of field goals for four of her six points on the night, Riley Noel and Catherine Paradis added baskets, and Noel and Serena Power each went 2 for 2 at the line.

The Yellowjackets also had balanced scoring in the frame, getting points from four players led by 5 from Megan Reilly, including a 3-pointer. Erica Branco added two field goals, with Leggett and Cassidy Button scoring once each.

Over the first six minutes of the second half, though, Milton took over. Leggett hit an early foul shot and added three field goals, but the killer was Bailey Reilly’s three from just in front of the student cheering section, bringing the Senior Night crowd to life and giving the hosts 10 straight points and a nine-point lead.

Another basket made it 31-20 before Missisquoi broke the run with a pair of foul shots by Riley Noel, the team’s first points of the half coming with just 1:51 left in the quarter.

A last-second drive by Power gave the Thunderbirds a lift going into the fourth and cut the gap to seven, but Milton never let MVU get closer than that and finally started making good at the foul line to stay in front.

Milton finished the night 10 for 20 on free throws, but only after a 5-for-8 effort in the fourth quarter.

Noel, who hit a big three for Missisquoi to get the gap back into single digits with five minutes to go, led MVU offensively with 11 points. Power finished with eight, and the two each hit 4 of 4 at the line. Emily Bourdeau added six, Isabel Paquette five, Kailie Manchester four and Paradis three.

Leggett led the Yellowjackets with 15 points and 17 rebounds, along with five steals and two blocked shots. Button kicked in 11 points, Megan Reilly nine, Blanco five, Chalmers three and Taylor Quintin two. Bailey Riley also scored three on her third-quarter bomb.
