Milton split its last two regular-season games and had a third wiped out by snow, and the Yellowjackets held on to the third seed for the Division II girls basketball tournament by a slim margin over BFA-Fairfax.
The Milton girls were scheduled to open their playoffs Tuesday night at home against No. 14 Hartford (2-17.) Results were not available at press time, but a win would earn a quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon at 2 also at home, likely against No. 6 Lake Region (11-9).
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Colchester topped Milton for the second time this season, 58-36.
Jackie Naigle led the Lakers with a game-high 18 points, with Alana Feeley (11) and Pearl Abiti (10) also reaching double figures. Paige Johnson scored a dozen for Milton.
Colchester, ranked fifth in Division I after a 16-4 season, accounted for half the losses this winter for Milton, which finished 15-4.
In a makeup game Saturday, the Yellowjackets got 18 points from Selena Patterson in a 47-38 win over visiting Mt. Mansfield.
Having already rescheduled the MMU game from an earlier postponement, Milton wasn’t able to play defending state champion and Division II leader Mt Abraham when that game was postponed Thursday and snowed out again Friday. Coupled with its win over the Cougars on Saturday, dropping the game against the Eagles — who won 61-26 when the teams met in Bristol on January 25 — kept Milton just ahead of BFA-Fairfax for third in the index standings used to determine playoff seeds.
Finishing third avoids another potential match against Mt. Abraham until the championship game, if both advance that far. Should Milton get through the first two rounds it would head to The Auditorium in Barre for the first time since 2010, and would play a semifinal February 26 at 8:15.
