Airplane masks

While the state-mandated face mask requirement has been lifted in Vermont, its important to remember federal mask requirements remain in place across all transportation networks.

These include:

  • Buses

  • Trains

  • Commercial aircraft

  • Airports

This mandate will be especially important when Amtrak rail service returns to Vermont on July 19.

“The recent lifting of the state COVID-19 restrictions is welcome news to us all,” AOT Secretary Joe Flynn stated in a recent press release. "We are excited for the return of Amtrak passenger rail service and inter-city bus service...and thank all riders for their patience and understanding of the remaining federal rules.

Vermont’s transportation systems are bound by federal rules and requirements. Both the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) are requiring face masks to be used until Sept. 13, 2021

Travelers who have not flown since last year may notice various changes already implemented at airport screening checkpoints nationwide.

At TSA checkpoints, travelers will continue to see all security screening officers wearing face masks and gloves. Acrylic barriers remain in place at most airports and new technology at hundreds of checkpoints greatly reduces the need for physical contact between officers and the public.

The TSA screening officer at the travel document checker (TDC) station will request travelers to temporarily lower their face mask to verify their identity. Those who approach the TDC without a face mask will be asked to obtain one to proceed.

“The federal mask requirement throughout the transportation system seeks to minimize the spread of COVID-19 on public transportation,” Darby LaJoye, the senior official performing the duties of the TSA administrator, stated.
