William Shafer

MILTON – William E. Shafer Sr., 88, died Thursday March 29, 2018.

Bill was born June 20, 1929 in Willimantic, Conn. He was the son of Harley and Helen (Sledjeski) Shafer. At an early age, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Japan during WWII.

Shortly after returning to the states, he married Eva Rayhall on Oct. 14, 1948 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Willimantic, Conn.

Together, they lived a very busy life, from owning two dairy farms, one in Connecticut and one in Cornwall, grocery stores in Wardsboro, So. Londonderry and Jeffersonville; a motel in Morrisville and a clothing store and restaurant in Middlebury. They retired to Maine for 18 years, returning to Vermont in September.

Bill is survived by his wife of over 69 years, Eva Shafer; his daughter Stephanie Adams and her husband, Gordon, all of Milton; his son William Shafer Jr. of Middlebury and by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his son Vincent Shafer and daughters Janette Shafer and Linda Roberts.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, April 3, 2018 from 10-11 a.m. with a funeral service held at 11 a.m. at Minor Funeral and Cremation Center in Milton.
