Despite only having a half dozen athletes entered in this year’s state wrestling tournament, the Yellowjackets were still able to muster 66 points, which was good enough for a seventh place finish in a field of nearly 20 teams that competed in the Vermont State Tournament at Otter Valley Union High School over the weekend.
Eric Godin (126 lbs.) finished in fourth place on the day, balancing his three wins over opponents from St. Johnsbury and Williamstown with two losses to Ben Murray of Mt. Abraham (7-0, 9-0). Despite being held back this month by a knee injury suffered in January, Ki Tedford (195 lbs.) also broke into the top five with his fifth place finish after taking two of his four matches.
Jayden Bradley (132 lbs.) and Spencer Bidwell (182 lbs.) both had individual match victories on the day.
It was heartbreak for Sam Gebo (285 lbs.), who came into the day with his eyes set on success at the state and New England level. He began by easily besting Gideon Bosch of Mill River in a time of 1:06 only to be later injured in the semifinals against Hunter Ladd of St. J. The injury was enough to force Gebo to forfeit his next two bouts, which dropped him to sixth place and dashed his hopes of moving on to the next level of competition.
It was Nick Johnson (195) who won the day for Milton by becoming the first ever Yellowjacket wrestling state champion. Johnson beat Jake Jones of Otter Valley with a 0:20 pin, Alick Lord of Harwood with a 2:24 pin and Colin Crowley of Mt. Anthony in the finals with a pin of 0:33. This was not Johnson’s first taste of success as he went on to become New England Champion (220 lbs.) last year, but this was his first time holding the title of Vermont State Champion.
The New England Championships will be held this coming weekend in Providence, R.I.
