Joseph takes Thetford title

Milton eighth-grader Ryan Joseph was one of four overall winners in Vermont’s largest invitational cross country race, the Woods Trail Run at Thetford Academy on Saturday.

Joseph, who won by 7 seconds with a time of 9 minutes, 53 seconds, and runner-up James Nash of Hampton (N.H.) Academy were the only runners in the field of 189 middle-schoolers to complete the challenging 2.7-kilometer course in under 10 minutes.

Another Milton eighth-grade runner, Emma Preiss, finished 11th among 139 girls.

In the massive high school competition, which included 585 girls and 762 boys split into five heats, Milton was led by Alex Lauzon in 188th place overall in the boys event and Brielle McDonald in 294th place for the girls.

Taylor Spillane of Champlain Valley ran away with the girls title by more than 40 seconds over teammate Autumn Eastman, while Montpelier’s Daniel Grosvenor held off Mt. Anthony’s Marc Brandmeyer in the boys race by just 1 second for the win.
