Joseph takes Thetford title

Milton eighth-grader Ryan Joseph was one of four overall winners in Vermont’s largest invitational cross country race, the Woods Trail Run at Thetford Academy on Saturday. Joseph, who won by 7 seconds with a time of 9 minutes, 53 seconds, and runner-up James Nash of Hampton (N.H.) Academy were the only runners in the field of 189 middle-schoolers to complete the challenging 2.7-kilometer course in under 10 minutes. Cary’s first goal gets ‘Jackets to .500

Milton freshman Nate Cary made his first varsity goal a big one, scoring the winner with nine minutes remaining as Milton edged Lamoille in Friday’s Lake Division boys soccer game, 3-2. Dominic Castine set up two goals for the Yellowjackets (5-5-1), whose win Friday was their third in four games while climbing into contention for a top-four seed in the Division II playoffs. Jon Covey scored a goal in each half, and Nate Dooley came through when called upon in goal for Milton, which shut out Division I South Burlington on Friday, 2-0. “Milton played a solid game,” coach Glen Button said. “We bent but we didn’t break and defended well.
