Rayner leads all Metro freshmen in districts

SWANTON — Milton’s Katie Rayner was the fastest freshman in either division at the Northern Vermont Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, finishing sixth in the Small Schools race and 28th overall out of 245 runners. With a strong finishing kick, Rayner crossed the line in 21 minutes, 42 seconds — 35 seconds ahead of Middlebury freshman Emily Fleming. The fastest ninth-grader in the Large Schools division was Jenna Emery of Essex (22:03). The Yellowjackets’ girls soccer team opened the playoffs with a stunning comeback victory over one ski academy, and the boys opened their Division II state tournament at home Wednesday afternoon, facing Stratton Mountain School at 3 p.m. at Bombardier Park. There’s no snow in this week’s forecast, which could be a very good sign for Milton’s soccer teams. The Yellowjackets’ boys and girls open their Division III state tournaments at home, both taking on athletic teams from ski academies. The Green Mountain Valley School will visit Milton for the second straight year in a Division II playdown-round game Tuesday at 3 p.m., and Stratton Mountain School will follow a day later for a boys playdown.
