Softball playoff run among year’s brightest spots

There were no team state championships for Milton in 2012, but there was plenty of success in a variety of sports and four individual titles in track and field, including a third straight crown for pole vaulter Karleigh Manfredi. The most surprising success story of the year was the Yellowjacket softball team, which in the tough Metro Division managed just a 6-10 regular-season record but came up two outs short of reaching the Division II championship game last June. After going to East Montpelier and pulling off a 9-3 victory over seventh-seed U-32, 10th-ranked Milton got a big gift...

O’Grady’s 27 not enough against Hornets

Back-to-back scores by Eric Savoy highlighted a nine-point run for Enosburg to break open a tie game, and the Hornets pulled away for a 73-54 boys basketball victory at Milton on Thursday night. Brandon Gleason racked up 29 points for the Hornets and Derryk O’Grady scored 27 for the Yellowjackets, but O’Grady’s output accounted for half the team’s points while Enosburg put together a more-balanced attack to take control of the contest. “It was a good team effort,” first-year Enosburg coach Matt Luneau said. “Brandon was getting good looks. But they were getting him the ball in scoring position...

Threes help lead Fairfax past Milton

The first of Chace Carpenter’s three 3-pointers gave BFA-Fairfax a halftime lead Friday night against visiting Milton, and her second started a nine-point run on the way to a 43-33 basketball victory. Senior forwards Meghan Bochanski (game-high 11 points) and Kayla Baczewski (six) provided the perfect complement to Carpenter’s long-range shooting — the sophomore’s other points coming on a long fourth-quarter three launched from at least six feet beyond the arc — as they dominated the second half inside and scored 11 of their combined 17 points after intermission. Milton was led by nine points from Nicole Menard, who...

Rayner runs to ninth in states

Milton’s Katie Rayner closed out an outstanding freshman season with a strong performance at the Vermont Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Thetford, just missing a berth in the New England meet while finishing ninth in the Division II race. The young Yellowjacket girls, with no seniors in the varsity race, took eighth place in the team standings with two more freshmen, Brielle McDonald and Elizabeth Bashaw; sophomore Kaitlin Brouard and junior Hannah Franzak completing the team scoring. Rayner was 45th among all three divisions in the varsity field of 250 runners. Her time of 22 minutes, 14.1 seconds...
