SWANTON — Emily Bourdeau followed a three-run homer in the second inning with a grand slam in the third, leading another big offensive day for Missisquoi as the Thunderbirds overpowered visiting Milton last Tuesday, 17-2 in five innings. Yellowjacket victory opens baseball season

The Yellowjackets scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, then pulled out a season-opening 10-9 victory over visiting Lyndon Institute last Saturday when Jake Laware’s walkoff single scored Ryan Austin. The Vikings built a 7-4 lead after three innings helped by two home runs and were three outs from a win with a 9-4 advantage midway through the seventh. PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Milton High School junior Nick Johnson won five straight matches by pin, earning the 220-pound title at the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships in Providence, R.I. last Friday and Saturday. Johnson finished second a week earlier in the Vermont state championships at Vergennes Union High School but took down state champions from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts to take the New England title. BOSTON — Mike Ferro of Milton ran a personal-best time to close the indoor track and field season, competing Saturday, March 4 in the New England Interscholastic Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center. Ferro, a junior, was 25th in the 1,000 meters with his best time, 2:44.28. Milton had two relay teams competing — Carson Bianchi, Jarek Cyr, Emilio DeSouza and Nick Kelm took 21st in the 4×200 (1:41.47) while Ferro, Zach Popke, Jake McNeil and Michael Outama were 25th in the 4×800 (9:02.35).
