FAIR HAVEN — Selena Patterson scored on a blast off an overtime breakaway as No. 9 Milton slipped past the No. 8 Slaters in last Wednesday’s Division III field hockey playdown game, 1-0. SOUTH BURLINGTON — Milton entered its final regular-season football game needing an upset to get into the Division II playoffs, but second-ranked Rice dominated for a 36-8 victory last Saturday. The Green Knights, assured of the second seed behind undefeated Burr & Burton, scored all of its points in the first half behind quarterback Chris Jansen, who threw two touchdown passes. Lauzon eighth to lead runners

THETFORD — Alex Lauzon knocked almost a minute off his 2013 time in Saturday’s Vermont Cross Country Championships, finishing eighth and leading the Milton boys team to fifth place among the 13 full teams competing in the Division II race. Lauzon completed the challenging Woods Trail course in 18 minutes, 17.9 seconds, improving 14 places and 50 seconds from the previous year despite an unseasonably warm day at Thetford Academy. WAITSFIELD — Milton threw all kinds of offensive pressure at Harwood early in Wednesday’s Division II girls soccer semifinal, but the Highlanders scored the day’s fist two goals and advanced to the state championship game with a 2-1 victory. SWANTON — Alex Lauzon’s runner-up finish in Saturday’s soaking-wet Northern Vermont Athletic Conference Championships led Milton’s boys to a strong third-place in the team standings, finishing a single point behind Rice Memorial. Middlebury dominated the Small School boys event, while Rice — led by individual champion Will Lacroix — edged Milton for second, 71-72.
