Athlete of the Week: Emilio Desouza

The Yellowjackets’ strong second-place effort in the Division II state championships was helped by two victories and 20 points from two relays, and Desouza was one of the common denominators among the 4×100 and 4×400 quartets. The two titles came by a combined third of a second. Desouza joined forces with Carson Bianchi, Tre Sherwood, and Zac St. Amour in the sprint relay, where Sherwood overtook Middlebury freshman C.J. The 3-sport standout closed her Yellowjacket athletics career in style at the Division II state championships Saturday at South Burlington H.S., turning in career-best jumps in her two strongest events. Chalmers began her day with a 15-foot, 1.5-inch long jump to place ninth out of 21 competitors. The Milton attacker had a record-setting day to lead the Yellowjackets into the Division II quarterfinals, scoring three times and picking up what is believed to be a program-record 12 points in the 17-3 playdown victoruy over visiting Otter Valley on May 30. Sherwood earned a pair of berths in the New England Interscholastic Track & Field Championships on June 9 in Durham, N.H., and picked up an Essex Invitational title along the way.
