Lake Region pulls away to close perfect season

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Possessing skill up top, plenty of senior leadership and 11 wins with a difficult schedule, everything was aligned for this to be the Yellowjacket boys’ year. But in last Saturday’s Division II championship game, top-seeded Milton ran into a team just as destined for greatness, facing an undefeated No. 2 Lake Region club that cut through everything Milton could throw at it. Rangers junior forward Riley Urie scored three times in a 13-minute stretch midway through the second half, turning a narrow 1-0 halftime lead into a 4-0 championship romp for the Rangers, the first title...

Yellowjackets hold on for rainy win

MILTON — After a stretch of tough opponents through the middle of the season, the Yellowjackets’ two-game homestand to finish the year was a welcome change to the gauntlet they had just faced. Battered, bruised and eliminated from post-season contention, Milton looked like a team still fighting for a playoff spot last Friday against a team that actually was. North County (3-5), which still had an outside shot at the fourth seed in the Division II playoffs, broke a 0-0 tie at the half with a third-quarter touchdown, but the Yellowjackets (3-5) scored twice in the final five minutes...

Articles defined for Fletcher, Fairfax merger

The option to merge Fletcher and Fairfax school districts was presented last Thursday by Rachelle LeVau, a member of both the study committee and the Fairfax School Board. The Fairfax-Fletcher merger presentation was more straightforward than the proposal to build a new high school, as the subcommittee has spent the last few months on practical negotiations rather than theoretical possibilities. The draft articles of agreement were negotiated from a template provided by committee adviser Steve Sanborn. Members worked through language discussing the makeup of the potential new board, grandfathering rules and preschool options. Fletcher Elementary currently offers preschool to...

Seahorses pull away for 40-14 win

BURLINGTON — The Yellowjackets did enough good things last Friday night to keep it close against Burlington (5-1) at Buck Hard Field. The problem was poorly timed mistakes by Milton (2-4, 1-4 in Division II), turning a game that threatened to be close into a lopsided 40-14 Seahorse victory that locked them into the playoffs, while all but ending the Yellowjackets’ postseason chances in the top-heavy division. Burlington scored on its opening drive, romping up the field in nine plays, capped by junior Kevin Garrison’s 14-yard sweep into the end zone 3 1/2 minutes into the game. Milton’s promising...

Milton prevails over Mt. Abe, 7-1

MILTON — Yellowjacket coach Glen Button has eased striker Ryan Brown back gradually this season as the standout senior comes off a knee injury in the offseason. Brown, even with a brace on his right knee, looked to be back at full strength last Saturday afternoon, scoring his first three goals of the season within the first 31 minutes of a convincing 7-1 victory over Division II rival Mt. Abraham. Just over a week after narrowly squeaking past the Eagles in a 2-1 road win, Milton (5-2-1) was the better team in all facets last Saturday, jump-started by two...
