Season-opener is chilly for Yellowjackets’ LAX

MILTON — A tough season-opener greeted Milton on Monday in the form of an 11-5 defeat at the hands of Division I Colchester. The visiting Lakers led comfortably throughout most of their first contest. Though D-II Milton never looked outclassed, the hosts trailed 5-1 at halftime and couldn’t seriously threaten the Lakers despite an improved second half. Aidan Connors led the CHS attack with three goals and three assists, contributing to more than half the Laker tallies. Brayden Wilkins scored a team-high four goals and assisted on another. Alex Deigneault and Luke Matthews added two goals each, Patrick Flaherty...

Milton downs Rice, 4-0

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Milton took down the Rice Green Knights 4-0 last Saturday with help from Tatum Shappy’s hat trick. In sweltering heat that prompted a break midway through the second half, Shappy and the Yellowjackets (3-1) stayed cool and built an impressive lead while holding the hosts to just a handful of scoring chances. “We actually do a lot of conditioning during the week, we do a lot of running, so I prepare the girls especially for these conditions,” Milton coach Shawntel Burke said. “We just tried to stay positive. I did a lot of subbing with...

Girls soccer extends winning streak

MILTON — A pair of second-half goals from Tatum Shappy prevented a disaster as Milton held on for a closer-than-anticipated 2-1 victory over Mt. Abraham last Thursday. Shappy sandwiched two goals — both begun with crosses from Carlie Reen that Taylor Quintin flicked to Shappy  — around a Mt. Abe (3-5) equalizer late in the second half to help Milton (7-1) survive the stubborn Eagles. The Yellowjackets extended their winning streak to five games and have allowed just two goals in that span. “It was just a strange game because I think we were doing a lot of things...

Brown’s 37 not enough to catch BFA

A blistering start was enough to propel BFA-St. Albans past Milton on February 3, with the Bobwhites overcoming 37 Ryan Brown points and a frantic Yellowjacket comeback effort to clinch at least a share of the Lake Division title with a 77-68 win. BFA (9-8) flew out of the gate with a 23-point first quarter that left Milton (7-10) playing catch-up the rest of the night. MHS never recovered fully, though it did succeed in cutting what was at one time a 16-point deficit in the third quarter down to as few as six in the final minutes of...

Walker, MVU survive comeback bid

MILTON — Richard Walker’s career-high 32-point night was the push Missisquoi needed to avenge a home loss to Milton earlier in the month and drop the Yellowjackets in Milton last Friday, 70-64. Walker exploded for 24 first-quarter points in what was an exciting game from start to finish. Milton’s Brandon Button swished a 3/4-court buzzer-beater to end the third quarter and put the hosts in position to cut MVU’s lead all the way down to a single point early in the fourth. The Thunderbirds (9-7) pulled away late, though, thanks in no small part to an 18-for-20 effort from...
