Boys’ basketball: Nothing more to give except thanks

By COACH CHRIS BROWN One of the best seasons of Milton varsity basketball on record came to an end with our boys battling for the state championship. After trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, struggling to score and struggling to get defensive stops, our team was able to come together on of the best runs of the season, coming up just a score or defensive stop away from finishing with the result that this Yellowjacket team had worked so hard for. I have to give a lot of credit to our guys. At the Barre...

Stories to write home about

Growing up in this area of Vermont, the great outdoors was always right outside my backdoor, so to some extent it made sense that I never attended a summer camp as a child. I was also fortunate enough to have an outdoor-loving family that took my sisters and me hiking and camping throughout the summer and created ample opportunities for carpentry projects on a small and grand scale. A variety of chores also “built my character” and a mastery in wood chopping, wood stacking, house painting, garden weeding, lawn mowing, roof repair, driveway repair, fence repair and manure redistribution...

Yellowjackets defeat Harwood in Division II quarterfinals

WATERBURY — The Harwood Union boys hockey team won’t be making its return to Gutterson Fieldhouse this winter. Plagued by the same inability to score that afflicted them for much of the season, the fourth-ranked Highlanders fell to No. 5 Milton, 1-0, Saturday in the Division II quarterfinals. Stymied by the hot glove of Milton goalie Jackson Ehler, Harwood’s hot-and-cold offense was unable to score. But in the end, streaky forwards weren’t the ones who cost Harwood its season. Instead, it was an inexcusable penalty taken by a Harwood defenseman in the third period that led to the Highlanders’...

Nick Johnson becomes first Yellowjacket wrestling state champ

Despite only having a half dozen athletes entered in this year’s state wrestling tournament, the Yellowjackets were still able to muster 66 points, which was good enough for a seventh place finish in a field of nearly 20 teams that competed in the Vermont State Tournament at Otter Valley Union High School over the weekend. Eric Godin (126 lbs.) finished in fourth place on the day, balancing his three wins over opponents from St. Johnsbury and Williamstown with two losses to Ben Murray of Mt. Abraham (7-0, 9-0). Despite being held back this month by a knee injury suffered...
