St. Albans – A Mass of Christian Burial for A. Raymond Benson, who passed away on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, was celebrated Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Church in St. Albans with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy officiating. Assisting at the altar were Fabio Choinere and Paul Bouchard. The organist and soloist was Mary-Jo Gillilan. The hymns included: “Amazing Grace,” “The Twenty Third Psalm,” “Ave Maria,” “Memories,” “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” “Song of Farewell” and “On Eagles Wings.”

Special honors were accorded the World War II Navy Veteran by members of the Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post #758, Veteran of Foreign Wars Funeral Detail. A great grandson, SFC Shane Gregoire, Junior ROTC carried the National Colors, escorted by great grandson, James Gregoire, Jr. Escorting the urn ark into church were members from St. Albans Council # 297 Knights of Columbus.

Offertory gifts were presented to Father Roy by great-grandsons SFC Shane Gregoire and James Gregoire, Jr.

In attendance was representation from St. Albans Town selectboard, Law Office of Tim Hurlbut, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Northwestern Medical Center, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Peoples Trust Company, Hometown Beverage, Bayside Bait and Tackle, Huntington Street neighbors, his former Georgia farm employees, Bayview Catering, Hard’ack Inc., Ladies of St. Anne and many friends.

Urn ark bearers were grandchildren Anthony Gregoire, James Gregoire, Lisa Zdziarski, Kristina Brenner and Raymond D. Benson.

Following prayers of committal by Father Roy, full Military Honors were accorded the World War II Navy veteran by a detail from the Vermont Air National Guard. Unfurling the American Flag and refolding were SGT Angelo Pasquale and SPC Derrell Murray. “Taps” was played by PFC Travis Dube. SGT Pasquale then presented the flag to the widow, Mrs. Janice Benson. Interment then followed in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Those in attendance were then invited to a reception at the parish hall hosted by the Ladies of St. Anne and Robert Santini. Assisting the Benson family is the Heald Funeral Home.
