Book Notes

When my mother-in-law declared herself an ardent fan of “Game of Thrones” last week, I knew the science-fiction/fantasy genre had truly reached a tipping point. Once relegated to Trekkie conferences and comic book stores, imaginary lands and futuristic technologies have appeared to invade mainstream pop culture in a big way. We’ve been doing our best to keep up with the trends at the library, and I’ve highlighted recent acquisition sure to appeal to Frodo and Spock fans alike. The Age of Miracles / Karen Thompson Walker Looking to dip your toe in the sci-fi waters? This beautifully wrought bildungsroman...

BASEBALL Tyler Lamphere’s home run staked the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 lead, but Division I leader Champlain Valley tied it up in the fifth and pulled away with four in the sixth inning for a 5-1 Metro Division baseball win last Saturday. Lamphere, who also doubled and pitched six strong innings, made it 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth with his homer. Kyle Apgar had the Yellowjackets’ only other hit of the day, and CVU did not walk a batter or make an error. Milton’s only other base runner was Luke Covey, who was hit by a pitch....

After falling behind by three goals in a dismal third quarter, Milton pulled off a comeback to tie last Wednesday’s lacrosse game against U-32 with 40 seconds to go. But after a scoreless first overtime period, the Raiders’ Jake Murray tallied a goal with three seconds remaining in double overtime for a 9-8 victory over the Yellowjackets in Division II play. “We battled all game long, so there’s no complaints with that,” said Milton assistant coach Jason Gorczyk. “It would have been great to pull off the win today, but tomorrow is another practice and we just have to...
