Messages from Montpelier

By SEN. TIM ASHE D/P – Chittenden County This year I became chair of the Senate Finance Committee, which is responsible for all tax-related policy in the Senate. I feel very strongly that if we were starting to write Vermont’s tax code from scratch today, we would not recreate the tax code we have. I suspect few readers of the Milton Independent will disagree that ideally we’d all pay the lowest taxes possible while meeting the state’s needs for safe roads, good schools, a clean environment and other important priorities. Unfortunately our tax code inadvertently requires us all to...

Special ballot for MHS projects

Coming this December: Take two for Milton High School’s proposed cafeteria and locker room renovations. The Milton School Board unanimously approved bringing the $5.9 million item to a special ballot on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The measure will represent the second try this year to pass the projects, which administrators say will fix mold, asbestos, accessibility and electrical issues. The original proposal, totaling $9.77 million, failed on Town Meeting Day. Since then, the price tag has shrunk twice. Monster Mile debut a success

Miltonians are a hardy bunch. They demonstrated this last Saturday, when a generous crowd turned out for the Milton Independent’s Monster Mile, a 1.1-mile Halloween-themed fun run, despite the rain and snow that sprinkled that blustery, decidedly winterlike day. Monster Mile netted 30 grocery bags’ worth of nonperishable items to stock the MFCC’s fast-emptying shelves. The center also got $121 in straight cash donations day-of, Food Shelf Manager Cheryl Alwine said. The Independent’s fundraising totals are still being...

Boys’ Day a success

The Milton Community Youth Coalition would like to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who made the first annual Boys’ Day a reality. The day was a great success with more than 50 attendees learning skills, having fun and making connections with strong male role models. This year’s event featured cooking with Steve Marinelli, tug-of-war and camping with Boy Scout Troop 603, rocket demonstrations with Howie from the Champlain Regional Model Rocket Club, movie making with Stephanie from LCATV and much more!  Mike and the Big Blue Trunk made a special appearance, as well as local owners of...
