Submitted by ROBERT IANNACO Franklin County Babe Ruth Franklin County’s 15-year-old Babe Ruth team’s run to a third consecutive Vermont State Championship fell one game short last Saturday afternoon, as they lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to Bennington. Franklin County was trying to accomplish something that no other team from there had done, and that was to be a Vermont State Champion as a 13-, 14- and 15-year-old team. Mueller tops Modifieds, Payea gets 1st Late Model win

Dylan Payea of Milton had to work for his first Limited Late Model win at Airborne Speedway last Saturday night. Payea was swarmed by Danny Sullivan for the final 12 laps. Police bust alleged heroin dealer

Essex police arrested a Milton man in possession of 12 small bags of heroin last week, Detective John Ruttenberg said. Essex police charged Wellison D. Leal, 25, with possession and sale of heroin and with transportation of regulated drugs into a detention facility following a search of his 22 River St. home on July 25, Ruttenberg said. Mears to lead 40th Army Band

Fans of local concert bands might have noticed a conspicuous absence at performances this summer. Milton native Phil Mears has led the Milton elementary and middle schools’ bands for 12 years and conducted the community ensemble last summer. He is also a 25-year National Guardsman working toward taking command of “Vermont’s Own” 40th Army Band. A five-week training course took Mears off the conductor’s platform and sent him to Warrant Officer Candidate School in Fort Rucker, Ala.
