Georgia Wind meets deadline

The Georgia Mountain Community Wind project is officially on the grid, officials announced last week. Getting all four turbines operational by the December 31 deadline guarantees the project $8 million in federal subsidies. It will cover about 28.5 percent of the $28 million cost, Project Manager Martha Staskus said. The monies are part of the now-expired 1603 Program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, that will pay for permitting, turbine parts, construction or other costs in lieu of tax credits. Letter: Boy Scouts serve community

The theme in November for Boy Scout Troop 603 was community service. Throughout the month, the troop held a food drive for the Milton Family Community Center Food Shelf, prepared a meal for the Salvation Army that served 100 people, made desserts for the United Church, and packed and helped distribute 120 Thanksgiving meals, which were donated to needy people in the community. Softball playoff run among year’s brightest spots

There were no team state championships for Milton in 2012, but there was plenty of success in a variety of sports and four individual titles in track and field, including a third straight crown for pole vaulter Karleigh Manfredi. The most surprising success story of the year was the Yellowjacket softball team, which in the tough Metro Division managed just a 6-10 regular-season record but came up two outs short of reaching the Division II championship game last June.
